About Rome City
Rome City is the largest community in Orange Township, Noble County, and encompasses Sylvan Lake. With a shore line of 16 miles and covering 640 acres, it is the largest lake in Noble County.
Sylvan lake was formed when a dam was constructed across a tributary of the Elkhart rivers as part of a proposed ship canal from Michigan City to Fort Wayne. The town of Rome City and the Sylvan Lake Improvement Association have worked together on several projects to continue to improve the region as a whole.
Rome City is also the home of the Gene Stratton-Porter state historical site located on the property of Limberlost Cabin, home of the renowned author and naturalist.
As of the 2000 US Census, there are 1,615 people living in Rome City.
